When Eric and I travel together, the answer to most of our questions
seems to be "I don't know," but this is how we have tentatively planned
the trip: We will fly into the swirling chaos of Delhi, one of the
largest, hottest, most crowded cities on the planet, and find transport
to the Himalayan foothill town of Manali, a 15-20 hour bus or truck
ride. Once in Manali, we will unpack the bikes, buy some food, pack the
trailers, get on our bikes and head north.
Each day will follow a similar schedule: Ride through dry mountainous
landscapes, enjoy the scenery, meet Tibetan locals, pass through small
nomad camps, cycle over extremely high mountain passes, and eventually
ride into the town of Leh. Each day we'll gain elevation, and the air
will get colder and thinner. We'll sleep every night in a lightweight
floorless tent From Leh we will attempt to bike up the Khardong la, at
over 18,200' the highest vehicle pass in the world, and into the Nubra
Valley, or travel east nto the more remote Zanskar Valley. The trip to
Leh may take anywhere from one and a half to 2 weeks, and then after a
few side trips, we'll return to Manali, either by the same road, or by
another route, if we discover there to be one...
